The 9 road is the oldest of the nine and it behaves that way: things end on it. Chapters close cleanly and often before the 9 is ready — a city left, a vocation outgrown, a relationship that was right for exactly as long as it lasted. Nines who fight this spend their lives in mourning. Nines who accept it discover that the space is the gift.
The lesson is scale of concern. The 9's natural pull is toward everyone, which is genuine and also a superb hiding place from the two or three people who actually need them this week. The road keeps narrowing the focus back down until the compassion is specific.
