What is your name's number?
Every name reduces to a number that carries a character. Calculate any name's, letter by letter, and see exactly how it was reached.
Name numerology assigns each letter a value, adds them, and reduces the total to a single number — unless it lands on 11, 22 or 33, which numerology keeps intact as master numbers. That number is read as the character a name carries: what it projects, what it suits, what it makes easy and what it makes harder.
This tool uses the Pythagorean values, which run A=1 through I=9 and then repeat through the alphabet. It is the system used everywhere else on this site, and it is the one most people mean when they say 'name numerology'. Business naming conventionally uses the older Chaldean system instead — the business checker shows both.
Add a date of birth and you get the Life Path too, which is the comparison people are usually really after: whether the name supports the road or pulls against it.
Enter a name to calculate its number, its character, and — with a birth date — your Life Path alongside it.
How the calculation works
- 1
Give every letter its value
A=1, B=2, C=3 … I=9, then J starts again at 1, and so on. Spaces, punctuation and numerals are skipped.
- 2
Add them up
Sum the values across the whole name as it is habitually used — first name alone if that is how you are known, first and last if that is.
- 3
Reduce, but stop on a master
Keep adding the digits of the total until you reach a single number — unless the total is 11, 22 or 33, which are kept as they are.
Worked example — Aarav
A=1 A=1 R=9 A=1 V=4
1 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 4 = 16
1 + 6 = 7
Aarav is a 7 — Ketu: the seeker, read for depth, research and a certain reserve.
Questions people ask
Should I use my full name or my nickname?
Numerology reads the name as it is habitually used. If everyone calls you by one name, calculate that one. The full birth name is used for the Destiny number specifically, on the reasoning that it describes what you were given rather than what you go by.
Does the surname count?
Only if you use it. A name people say in full is calculated in full; a name that is only on documents is read as the birth-name Destiny number rather than the everyday one.
What if my name is in Hindi or another Indian script?
Numerology as practised in India works from the Roman transliteration, which is why spellings like Rajiv and Rajeev give different numbers. Use the spelling you actually write in English.
What are master numbers 11, 22 and 33?
Totals numerology does not reduce, because they are read as heightened versions of 2, 4 and 6 — more potential and more intensity. If a name adds to 11, it is an 11, not a 2.
Can I change my name's number?
Changing the spelling changes the number — that is the whole basis of name correction, which has its own tool here. Whether it changes anything else is a question about what you believe, and no arithmetic answers it.

Numerology is an interpretive tradition, not a science. The arithmetic on this page is exact and shown in full so you can check it; the meanings are what the Vedic and Chaldean traditions hold.
