Vehicle number numerology
The numerology number of a car, bike or commercial registration — calculated from the plate, with every step shown.
An Indian registration plate carries more than an identity: MH 12 AB 3456 has a state code, a district code, a series and a four-digit number, and numerology reads all of it. The digits are summed and reduced to a single number from 1 to 9, and the letters — which have numeric values of their own — are usually counted with them.
The tradition's reading of a vehicle number is not about the vehicle. It describes what the vehicle is best used for and what its owner should watch: a 5 plate is the classical choice for anything commercial, a 4 is read as needing paperwork kept exact, and a 9 comes with a caution about speed that every source repeats.

How the calculation works

Take the whole registration
Include the state and district codes, the letter series and the number — everything on the plate. A partial plate gives a partial number.

Convert the letters
Each letter carries a value: A=1, B=2 … I=9, then J=1 again, and so on through the alphabet.

Add everything and reduce
Sum the digits and the letter values, then keep reducing until you have a single number from 1 to 9. Master numbers are not used for objects — only for people.
Worked example — MH 12 AB 3456
Digits: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 21
Letters: M=4, H=8, A=1, B=2 = 15
Total: 21 + 15 = 36
Reduce: 3 + 6 = 9

Questions people ask
Should I count the state code letters?
The common Indian practice is yes — the whole plate is the vehicle's name. Some practitioners use only the numeric portion. This tool counts everything you type, and shows the digits and letters separately in the working so you can see both totals.
Is there an unlucky vehicle number?
No number is unlucky. The tradition attaches a specific caution to each: 4 asks for exact paperwork and servicing, 8 is read as slow and better suited to heavy or commercial use, 9 comes with an instruction to drive carefully. None of these is a prediction, and none is a reason to pay a premium for a plate.
Which number is best for a commercial vehicle?
5, Mercury's number, is the classical choice for anything that trades or covers distance. 8 is traditionally associated with heavy vehicles and long ownership. Both readings are on this page.
Does changing my number change my luck?
The tradition does not claim that, and neither do we. A vehicle number describes what the tradition associates with a number — the driving is still done by the driver.
