The Lo Shu square is the oldest object in numerology — a 3×3 magic grid in which every row, column and diagonal sums to fifteen, known in India as the Saturn yantra and in China as the pattern found on a turtle's shell in the river Lo. Vedic numerology uses it as a chart: you write out the digits of your birth date and place each one in its own cell.
What the grid shows is distribution. A digit that appears three times is read as amplified; a digit that never appears is a missing number, read as a quality the date did not supply. The three rows, three columns and two diagonals form eight 'planes', and a plane whose three numbers are all present is read as a completed strength.
Two numbers sit under the grid: the driver (mulank, your birth day reduced) and the conductor (bhagyank, the whole date reduced). Indian numerology treats these as the pair that actually runs the chart — the grid describes the raw material, and those two describe what is done with it.
How the calculation works

Write the date in full
Use DD-MM-YYYY with leading zeros — 05-09-1994 gives the digits 0, 5, 0, 9, 1, 9, 9, 4. Zeros are not placed on the grid; only 1 to 9 have cells.

Place each digit in its cell
The square is laid out 4-9-2 on the top row, 3-5-7 in the middle, 8-1-6 on the bottom. A digit that appears twice is written twice in the same cell.

Read what is there and what is not
Repeated numbers are amplified, absent numbers are gaps, and a row, column or diagonal with all three numbers present is a complete plane.
Worked example — 05-09-1994
Digits placed: 5, 9, 1, 9, 9, 4 (both zeros dropped)
Present: 1, 4, 5, 9 — with 9 appearing three times
Missing: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8
Driver (day 5) = 5 Conductor (0+5+0+9+1+9+9+4 = 37 → 10 → 1)

Questions people ask
Do zeros go on the grid?
No. The Lo Shu square has cells for 1 to 9 only, so zeros in a birth date are simply not placed. This is why dates from the 2000s often produce sparser grids than dates from the 1900s.
What does it mean if a number appears three or four times?
It is read as amplified — that quality is strongly present, and in excess it takes on the number's difficult side rather than its useful one. Three 9s is read as considerable drive; it is also read as a temper.
Is a missing number bad?
No. It describes a quality the birth date did not hand you automatically, which the tradition says can be built deliberately. Every missing-number page on this site is mostly about how, and the practices are ordinary — a scheduled hour, a written system, a daily walk.
What are the Golden and Raja yogas?
The two diagonals: 4-5-6 (the Golden Yoga) and 2-5-8 (the Raja Yoga). Both pass through the centre. Having either complete is singled out in the tradition as unusually favourable.
Is this the same as the Lo Shu in feng shui?
Same square, different use. Feng shui maps it onto a building's directions; Vedic numerology maps a birth date onto it. The grid is shared, the reading is not.
